July Fishing Report

Report Date: July 14, 2008

For a guy that specializes in Light Tackle Fishing in North Biscayne Bay I am finding myself fishing in Flamingo more then anywhere and the reason is that with the hot summer conditions fishing in Flamingo is always somewhat more consistent then many other areas including North Biscayne Bay. Snook are spawning and at times can be so thick that it is almost too easy and then the redfish can be just as thick, mangrove snapper seem to be around every mangrove tree, cobias are on the rockpiles and wrecks, goliath groupers are around the same trees the snappers like and a few gag groupers as well. Then there are sea trout, ladyfish, jacks, tripletail, permit, tarpon, mackerel, bluefish and all the sharks you care to fight. During the summer you just can't get that action in North Biscayne Bay although the night fishing for snook, tarpon, jacks and snapper can be interesting. I like to give my clients the best opportunity at catching the most fish and Flamingo has been the place for that kind of action. Fishing in North Biscayne Bay has been good during the day when we have had overcast conditions that have cooled the water and kept the fish hungry but as soon as the sun gets up high and starts shining the fish shut down. Offshore lots of bonitos, scattered dolphins and some nice snappers have been available.
Recent Catches:
Darrel Owen and his buddy fished Flamingo and caught 8 small snook, snappers, plenty of six pound jacks, 1-23 lb. cobia out of 4 that we had shots at and a goliath grouper. The Cobia ate a Hook Up lure tipped with a Gulp shrimp.
Barry Kutun and his son and grandsons teamed up to catch over 50 sea trout to 3 pounds and mangrove snappers to 1.5 pounds during a stormy morning in North Biscayne Bay. A lot of the fish were caught on Hook Up lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp during a half day charter.
Jason and Tricia Sapp fished Flamingo and caught snook, sea trout, redfish, lost a tarpon, a gag grouper, jacks, ladyfish, bluefish, lots of sharks and a huge ray.
Took my son out looking for Dolphins on July 4th and ran 15 miles offshore to find nothing and then came in to 5 miles offshore and saw a splash and cast a Rattle Trap at the splash and Zach hooked up to a large dolphin that threw the plug on the second jump. There were smaller dolphins with that fish but they were not interested in what we were throwing their way. came in on a wreck and caught three out of many bonitos that came to the boat plus a nice mutton snappers and a lot of lane snappers.
Fished Vladimir and his sons Michael and Alex in North Biscayne Bay for a four hour trip and struggled with the 88 degree morning temperatures that quickly got into the low 90's by 11:30 when we came in. The guys managed to catch a half dozen trout and a dozen snappers.
Today I am fishing Bill, Ann and Sarah Simpson from Miami in Flamingo. Sarah would like to catch her first big shark and there have been plenty of them around but today she would catch sea trout and her first snook but the only shark bite we had got away. Bill would like to take some fish home but the cobias, tripletail and redfish managed to stay away from us. Instead bill would catch snook, sea trout, mangrove snapper, jacks and ladyfish. We did have snook to 33 inches and lost bigger ones as well as seeing a large redfish, schools of big snook and one large tarpon that did not eat our offerings. Ann enjoyed the waters of Whitewater Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
Next up is Rich Moore and his fishing buddy Al and we are back in Flamingo. A year ago Rich and Al fished offshore with me and Al hooked into a 60 pound sailfish on light tackle that drug us all over the ocean. It took 5 hours to catch and release this fish. Today we started in Whitewater Bay but no takers. Then out to the Gulf shorelines where we found huge schools of pilchards and I netted a well full. We fished around the pilchards and landed 2 redfish one undersized and one legal and a small snook. We moved on and tried our luck at tripletail and cobias but no luck. Next spot produced lots of small snook and we moved on. A little creek rewarded us with a few larger snook that ran, jumped and got away. At the creek mouth we caught three nice redfish. The storms started to threaten so we moved back into Whitewater Bay to finish the day and for the next two hours we chummed with pilchards and had fish going nuts around us. The guys caught or lost a snook, trout, snapper or goliath grouper on almost every cast.
Flamingo will continue to produce great catches for the next 4 months. North Biscayne Bay will be good on the cooler mornings and late afternoons into the evenings. Offshore on the calm days dolphins and bonitos plus some snappers and in South Biscayne Bay early and late and during the overcast days permit and bonefish will be biting.
So that’s what’s happening in my neck of the woods. Now it’s your turn to become part of my fishing report.
