Wow! South Florida Fishing is Great!

Report Date: January 1, 2010

The Holidays are fast approaching or already upon us and I have been so busy guiding that I have hardly had a chance to do any shopping. If you are still looking for a gift for a friend or relative and really want to put a smile on their face then purchase a Gift Certificate from “Get Em” Sportfishing Charters skippered by Capt. Alan Sherman.

Fishing in Biscayne Bay has been very good with lots of action from Spanish and cero mackerel, groupers, mutton, mangrove and yellowtail snappers, porgies, all of the blue runners and jacks you can shake a stick at and some nice size sea trout for catch and release. Launching at Crandon Park Boat ramp we are fishing in just a matter of minutes and most of the action is taken place on light tackle.

Flamingo in Everglades National Park is loaded with all kinds of wildlife. Recently within minutes of a charter my clients are seeing manatees, bottle nosed dolphins, tarpon, alligators, crocodiles and more birds then I can name. Just amazing! Once out on open water there are big sharks to be seen and sea turtles. Then just for a little added spice the fishing has been great. Snook and sea trout for catch and release and redfish and tarpon can be targeted within a 10 minute ride of the Marina and further out on the edges of the Park goliath grouper, Spanish mackerel, jacks, ladyfish and cobia and some monstrous sharks are there for the waiting.

On a pleasure trip with my family in Flamingo we enjoyed non stop action from bluefish, Spanish mackerel, jacks, sharks and a 12.5 pound redfish.

Offshore fishing when the weather allows has been excellent with sailfish, mackerel, kingfish, bonito, skip jack tuna, big snapper and grouper and dolphins being caught everyday.

Fishing with Jerry Chaves and his Grandkids offshore after catching a loqad of bait we ran offshore and had fast action on kingfish, bonitos, dolphins and sailfish.

Fishing with my son before he heads off to his first reel job we headed out to the offshore waters off of Miami. We netted a vcouple of a hundred pilchards and then fished a few spots offshore before anchoring the boat in 100 feet of water. Once the lines were in the water we had non sto[p action from kingfish in the 10 pound range, bonitos, bluerunners. mutton snappers and porgies before a storm chased us back to the dock. The fishing was red hot and the fish were eating the live pilchards plus Rapala X Raps.

So let’s go fishing! Give me a call or send me an e-mail and lets see what kind of a memory we can create!

Need a gift for a special person? Check out my wish list below and you might find something in my list that someone close and dear to you may deserving for the holidays.
Does that special person own a boat & motor? No then check out the fine line of boats like the 22' Pathfinder XL made by Maverick boats powered by a 225 Four Stroke Yamaha outboard engine. Add a Power Pole and never have to stake out or throw an anchor in shallow water again. www.powerpole.com. Top it off with a Continental Trailer and your all set. Bob Hewes Boats has a fine line of these packages. Call Jim or Brian Wiborg at 305-681-6602 or stop by one of the two show rooms. 7701 Northwest 54st off the Palmetto Expressway or at 12565 & NW 7th Ave. in Miami. www.bobhewesboats.com, www.yamahamotors.com, www.maverickboats.com, www.continentaltrailers.com
Don't forget a trolling motor to go with that boat. Check out the fine line of Minn Kota trolling motors that Master Repair in Stuart carries. 1-772-220-7777 or 1-954-566-5833 or stop by the shop at 4446 SE Commerce Ave. in Stuart, Fl. www.masterrepairinc.com, www.minnkotamotors.com
Well if you want to make that boat perfect then you will need a state of the art Depth Recorder/GPS and the best by far is the Lowrance. www.lowrance.com /> If you like to fish like me or you know someone who does then you will need a quality fishing reel and rod. Daiwa makes some of the finest reels on the market. www.daiwa.com and then you can't go wrong by matching the reel to a Key Largo Rod. www.keylargo.com. /> Fill your reels with Berkley line and your tackle box with Berkley products like the Gulp shrimp. www.purefishing.com. /> Every serious fisherperson needs a high quality cast net and the one I use is manufactured by Lee Fisher Nets. www.justcastnets.com. /> My favorite jig head made by Hookup Lures. www.hookuplures.com and
my favorite plugs Twitchin Raps, X Raps, Skitter Walks all made by Rapala. www.rapala.com. /> Everyone needs some hooks and quality fishing line so check out the Mustad line at www.mustad.no /> How about a subscription to the best Saltwater Fishing Magazine in print? Florida Sportsman Magazine is a great gift for any fisherperson and the Magazine also sells waterproof fishing charts for all of Florida, books that teach you how to fish for almost every species that swims, how to tie hooks, leaders and knots and then there are cook books as well. And don't forget to Florida Sportsman Apparel! www.floridasportsman.com. /> If you live on the water or fish at night then add a Super Fish Light to your sea wall or dock and bring the fish right to your back yard. www.superfishlight.com. /> One of my favorite tools while fishing in North & South Biscayne Bay and in Flamingo is the Cajun Thunder float. This float has been responsible for more catches then I could ever list. The product is a creation of Precision Tackle and the floats can be purchased at any leading fishing tackle supplier.
A special gift might be the StowMaster folding landing net. This by far is the best net on the market. A special coating has been applied to the mesh of the net and this coating won't allow a hook to penetrate the mesh. Ever have a fish in a landing net and have the treble hooks of your plug get stuck in the mesh. Just how frustrating is that? Won't happen with the StowMaster landing net and then it folds in half and easily fits in a rod locker.
www.stowmaster.net. /> And last but not least every boater needs a vehicle that he or she can depend on to pull your boat to and from the fishing grounds. And Chevrolet is the vehicle for me. Check out the fine line of SUV's and trucks manufactured by General Motors and sold by Chevrolet. www.chevrolet.com. /> And of course they will need something sporty and fashionable to wear so get them some Columbia Sportswear and then they will look like they belong on the boat with that big fish attached to their line!
Check out my report in the Miami Herald's Sports section under Fishing Updates each Thursday, the Florida Sportsman Magazines South Florida Internet Fishing Report
www.floridaspotsman.com), my monthly Action Spotter Fishing Report for the South Region in the Florida Sportsman Magazine each month.

I have recently been wearing a lot of Columbia Sports Wear on my fishing charters and the new Blood & Guts shirts are amazing. I have had mackerel, cobia and snook just splatter me with blood and one good washing and the shirts are as good as new. Check out their web site at www.columbia.com />
